Dispatch #17/23
Welcome to Tech Dispatch #17/23, where we share fascinating articles about Acceleration and Resilience. This week, we discuss accountability in the AI supply chain, AWS's updated Well-Architecture Framework, "The Dark Side of DevOps," and the SRE Wishlist. For the first time, we also have a playlist for SRE code warriors. Share your thoughts on SRE wish lists, emerging technologies, and policy-as-code implementation challenges. Stay tuned for more insights!
Poem of the week:
SREs they're the ones you call when your systems fall.

Here are some fascinating articles and podcasts that we came across this week:
"Ethics is someone else problem." We all know that developers often see just their piece of software. Here described in the AI area. This text introduces the concept of located accountability in the AI supply chain. It proposes a shift towards value chain thinking: [2209.09780] Dislocated Accountabilities in the AI Supply Chain: Modularity and Developers' Notions of Responsibility (arxiv.org)
AWS updated its Well-Architecture Framework. It supports cloud architects in building resilient and efficient infrastructure around six pillars—operational excellence, security, reliability, performance efficiency, cost optimization, and sustainability: AWS Well-Architected - Build secure, efficient cloud applications (amazon.com)
First, I love this title, "The Dark Side of DevOps." It's simple and effective. The article explains that shifting Left in DevOps empowers developers by moving activities earlier in the software development process. But the dark side is that it increases their responsibilities and cognitive load. Companies need to consider this when they add new capabilities to keep up with changes in technology and business needs. The text provides a comprehensive overview of the benefits and challenges. It also highlights the importance of evaluating which stage of the DevOps journey a company is at to avoid wasting resources on solving problems that are not relevant to their current needs: https://www.infoq.com/articles/devops-shifting-left/
The SRE Wishlist: Beyond the Obvious. On the list are also some innovative and emerging technologies that have caught the attention of SREs. Some of the critical items on the SRE wishlist are Policy-as-Code, Psychological Safty and OpenTelemetry, and Trace-Based Testing: https://thenewstack.io/our-2023-site-reliability-engineering-wish-list/

Now, we want to know your thoughts:
What's on your SRE wish list?
What are some of the most innovative and emerging technologies that you have seen SREs adopt in recent years to enhance the observability and scalability of their systems?
In your experience, what are some of the biggest challenges SREs face when trying to implement policy-as-code, and how can these be overcome?
